Institut Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (IKIP) Surabaya yang merupakan
cikal bakal Universitas Negeri Surabaya didirikan berdasarkan SK Menteri
Perguruan Tinggi dan Ilmu Pengetahuan nomor 182/1964 tanggal 19
Desember 1964. Pada masa awal perkembangannya, IKIP Surabaya memiliki
lima fakultas, salah satunya adalah Fakultas Keguruan Ilmu Eksakta
(FKIE) yang secara resmi berdiri pada tanggal 1 Januari 1968.
Pendirian Jurusan Biologi Unesa berawal dari Jurusan Pendidikan
Biologi, FKIE-IKIP Surabaya, berdasarkan Surat Keputusan Menteri
Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Nomor 3373/KT/I/SP/68 tanggal 4 Desember 1968.
Selanjutnya, sejak tahun 1977 Sekolah Tinggi Olahraga berintegrasi ke
dalam dalam IKIP Surabaya, maka berdasarkan Peraturan Pemerintah R.I.
nomor 27/1981 IKIP Surabaya memiliki enam fakultas, yakni Fakultas Ilmu
Pendidikan (FIP), Fakultas Pendidikan Bahasa dan Seni (FPBS), Fakultas
Pendidikan Matematika dan Ilmu pengetahuan Alam (FPMIPA), Fakultas
Pendidikan Ilmu Pengetahuan Sosial (FPIPS), Fakultas Pendidikan
Teknologi dan Kejuruan (FPTK), dan Fakultas Pendidikan Olahraga dan
Kesehatan (FPOK).
Fakultas Pendidikan Matematika dan Ilmu pengetahuan Alam (FPMIPA)
merupakan awal mula Fakultas Matematika dan Ilmu pengetahuan Alam Unesa;
sedangkan Jurusan Pendidikan Biologi merupakan cikal bakal Jurusan
Biologi. Selanjutnya, Program Studi S1 Pendidikan Biologi didirikan
berdasarkan Keputusan Menteri Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan RI Nomor:
0558/O/1983 tanggal 8 Desember 1983.
Pada perkembangan berikutnya, tahun 1999 berdasarkan SK Presiden R.I.
Nomor 93 Tahun 1999 tanggal 4 Agustus 1999, IKIP Surabaya mendapatkan
perluasan mandat (wider mandate) dan berubah menjadi
Universitas Negeri Surabaya (Unesa). Sejak tahun 1999 tersebut,
Universitas Negeri Surabaya memiliki enam fakultas, yaitu Fakultas Ilmu
Pendidikan (FIP), Fakultas Bahasa dan Sastra (FBS), Fakultas Matematika
dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam (FMIPA), Fakultas Ilmu Sosial (FIS), Fakultas
Teknik (FT), dan Fakultas Ilmu Keolahragaan (FIK). Jurusan Pendidikan
Biologi menjadi Jurusan Biologi yang selanjutnya selain mengelola
Program Studi S1 Pendidikan Biologi, juga mengelola Program Studi S1
Biologi yang didirikan berdasarkan Keputusan DirekturJendral Pendidikan
Tinggi Departemen Pendidikan & Kebudayaan RI Nomor
191/DIKTI/Kep/1999.

The term “excellent” referred to the FMNS Vision means to be
innovative, competitive, and always trying to improve quality. The term
“strong” means to work systematically, methodically, and objectively, in
order to support the excellence of the studies in mathematics and
natural sciences.
Missions of FMNS are as following.
To organize innovative and research-based mathematics and
natural sciences education in order to produce graduates who have
environmental insight, an entrepreneurial spirit and global
competitiveness.
To conduct mathematics and natural sciences
research in strengthening science that is recognized nationally and
internationally as well as strengthening mathematics and natural
science education.
To organize research-based community service for supporting the community welfare.
